Stress & Coping Strategies Discussion

Q Discussion Prompt & Reply Instructions Your Initial Post - Due Thursday by 11:59PM Scenario: All students feel at least some level of stress during their educational endeavors. However, one area that can cause considerable stress is choosing a major and/or career. I would like you to offer the following student suggestions based on the module information and textbook readings, specifically focusing on healthy coping strategies for stress. Gabriela is in her second semester navigating College of the Sequoias. She previously received decent grades in high school without having to study too much and knows she wants to further her education to make a good life for herself. Now that she has completed her first semester, she's realizing there's a lot to college. Classes are harder than high school and her grades aren't quite what she had hoped for as a college student. She also doesn't know anyone on campus. Now she's in her Introduction to Psychology course and realizing she doesn't really think she likes it or the major she chose, Associate of Arts for Transfer in Psychology to become a School Psychologist. She honestly has no idea what career she wants to do now and is completely stressed about her current course load, picking classes for next semester, and what she should do about her major and future career plans. She's overwhelmed and has been finding that she's been getting migraines more frequently. She is really concerned that between her lack of direction and sub-par grades she may be risking her financial aid, and ultimately, missing the opportunity to achieve her goals and provide for her future. You run into Gabriela at the COS Grind Coffee Shop and start a conversation with her as you both attended the same high school. She shares with you her many concerns and you immediately notice her level of stress is high. As a COUN 100 student, you know that navigating college, as well as, deciding on a major and career path is likely to spark feelings of stress, but there are many on-campus resources and healthy techniques that can be utilized. Prompt: 1. Identify at least two of Gabriela's stressors. 2. Then suggest at least 2 ways Gabriela may be able to minimize her stress with healthy coping strategies. 3. Gabriela is experiencing a lot of stress due to not knowing which direction to take to further her education. She doesn't know if she wants to continue with psychology or change her major to something she's more interested in. One of her problems is not having anyone on campus to help guide her better. If she knew more people she could take advice from them. They may be able to help her find different resources she can benefit from.
